OUTDOOR POOLS

Outdoor City Pools Managed by the Mankato Family YMCA

Inclement Weather Plan for Outdoor Pools

At the Mankato Family YMCA the safety of members, program participants, and staff is our highest priority.

Temperature related closures:
NOAA weather app will be used by YMCA staff and City staff to monitor temperature – YMCA staff will open the Pool if temperatures are predicted to reach 70 degrees before 3pm. (If temps do not reach 70 degrees by 3pm, the facility will not open.)

Lightning or Thunder: When thunder or lightning is first noticed, outdoor pool activities will be suspended and all outdoor pools and pool decks will be evacuated until 30 minutes after the last sign of thunder or lightning.

Rain/Wind: If heavy rain or high winds causes bottom obstruction, pools will be cleared and swimming halted until the lifeguards can effectively see the bottom of the pools.

Tourtellotte Pool Swim Testing

The Mankato Family YMCA performs a test on all Tourtellotte pool participants ages 18 and under who wish to swim at any of our pools. The aquatics team is estimating to be able to test between 190-220 swimmers per hour.

> Blue Area: In order to use the diving well and any pool area deeper than 4’3’’ participants must show competency in the following skills:

1. Swim a total of 30 meters without stopping. Their face is not required to be in the water but they must show positive forward movement at all times.

2. The swimmer must perform a deep water plunge in our pool and resurface and then tread water for 30 seconds successfully without stopping.

3. Once a swimmer passes these skills they are issued a Blue wristband that they must wear at any time they wish to swim.

> Green Area: To use areas of the main pool between the 3’5’’ to 4’3’’, swimmers must show competency in the following skills:

1. Swim a total of 20 meters without stopping or touching the bottom of the pool. Their face is not required to be in the water but they must show positive forward movement at all times.

2. Once a swimmer passes these skills they are issued a Green wristband that they must wear at any time they wish to swim.

3. If a swimmers fails the swim test, we will allow the use of US Coast Guard approved life jackets as life saving devices. Participants must also be within arm’s reach of an adult at all times while using the pool – Participants who fail the test will also wear a Red wristband
